Peace and Perfection

10:35pm as I start this post, its completion time will be noted at the end. For all of those wondering where Cole's daily blog is, if you're a night owl, you've caught it.

The following picture was taken this past Friday evening. What you see has become Cole and Dad's daily routine of hang time, and is usually the spot where I'm posting the latest blog.

in this picture
Cole
swaddled in the softest thermal blanket ever
head resting on a small cloth
resting on the cleft between my closely pressed knees
in front of my cherry tv tray
where rests my newsest journal that I began the day of Cole's birth
where rests my 0.5mm pilot G-2 pen (I've tried dozens, this one is the best)
where rests my right hand (because I'm right handed)
attached is my arm
where rests arm-hair equal to the length of Cole's head-hair
behind my arm-hair is my last journal which I began the week of my college graduation and wedding to Cole's mom
which rests upon my books--"Celebration of Discipline", a book I've been studying this year
which rests upon my "Renovare' Bible" (Latin for "renew", I know, fancy ain't it)
that sits next to my Dell Latitude laptop computer
which plays a massive playlist, entitled "the works" of all my favorite music (like an iPod, only harder to go for a run with)
where I now type this late-night, rambling, random, yet strangely entertaining (and you know it) blog.
;)

Thanks Nana!

From Cole's Mom
Mom, thank you so much for EVERYTHING you've done this week to take care of us-meals, laundry, diaper duty, etc. We've had a very special week with some wonderful memories with only more to come. Cole appreciated you so much that she had some things she would like to tell you!

"Thanks for introducing me to my fingers, Nana!"

"I sure love when you hold me, Nana!"

"Wow Nana, you are beautiful!"

On Choosing Her Name

Cole. my first reaction-"a strong name"

January, 2006. A Barnes and Noble in Bloomington, Illinois we sat across the table from one another seperated by a mountain of books filled with names that could become her own.

In the end, her name wasn't in the baby books, not for a "her" anyway. Jessica has been working through possible names for her children since she could pronounce her own. She read aloud her most updated list, scratched on a piece of paper, "Bren... Brett... Bri... Cole...". "Cole." I repeated, "I like that."

We've always been a fan of "Coleman" for a boy and maybe call him "Cole." Coleman is Jessica's mom's maiden name.

We batted around a few more names and Cole continued to role off of our tongues. "Cole. Cole. Cole...". "What are the pitfalls?" We had to think through every stage of life- infant, grade school, high school, adulthood, old age. Cole. What would be the reactions? "Is it too much of a boy's name? Will people say, 'your name is... i'm sorry, did you say you are cold?' or 'Cole? Is that short for something?' Will people just not get it?"

The strengths far out-weighed our percieved pitfalls. In fact, its risks were it strengths.

Next stop, Chile's. Our usual-bottomless chips and salsa, a bacon-ranch burger, fries, and water with lemon to save a couple of bucks. "So did we just decide on our child's name?" I asked. "Did we?" Jessica echoed. "I guess we did." Jessica and I pretty much went into giddy-mode for the rest of dinner.

and my initial reaction remains

starbucks. decatur, illinois

a new rare and sacred moment. a midday coffee (needed as none before it), a pen, and paper.

five days my life has been forever changed as i sit here, stealing moments to reflect on and maybe begin to process what is going on inside of me. in a word-assuredness-that comes from a new and solid confidence and pride that i, brian james talty, am charged with care of her. and it is a god-ingrained confidence available to every man who is called father.

she trusts me. she trusts me out-right, to secure her heavy head, to support her every inch with these hands, to attend to her every cry, to comfort her every need. father. the strongest of words, in every way you want it to be. . . .
